Ryobi P340 vs. P343: Which One Is Better.

It’d be unfair not to mention Ryobi when you’re looking for efficient tools within a restricted budget. Ryobi’s cordless oscillating tools are a staple for avid DIY-ers and entry-level professionals. The P340 and P343 by Ryobi really is a great find for anyone jumping into the world of technical jobs. 

These tools are essentially identical in terms of their function. However, the P340 offers exceptional versatility while the P343 shows performance constraints due to a few lacking features.

Anyway, we don’t mean to put the P340 on a pedestal as of now because the P343 outshines the P340 in several other aspects.

These prices are just for the bare tools so you can consider an additional 30 to 50 bucks gone for additional accessories or battery packs. Anyway, as for the cost of P340, it’s mainly because of the multiple head attachments that come with it. The P340 offers you the functionality of multiple tools in one so Ryobi may as well cover the cost. 

In contrast, the P343 at $55 is pretty inexpensive given the fact that it’s a newer tool with a brushless motor system. However, it does not offer the versatility of the P340 so comparing prices might be a bit unfair. 

In short, both the P343 and P340 are priced fairly in accordance with their functions. So neither of them gets an edge over the other!

Motor Type 

The P340 is a brushed tool whereas, the P343 utilizes a brushless motor system. The efficiency of any tool is greatly affected by the type of motor it is equipped with. 

The Ryobi P343 is loaded with an efficient brushless motor system. These brushless motors are known for minimal loss of energy, durability, and consequently better performance as opposed to their brushed counterparts.

The P340 is a brushed motor tool which means it is not as efficient in terms of its function. The P340 is an older version so the use of brushed motors is understandable. However, there’s no doubt about the fact that the P340 is just as reliable as the P343. 

Multi-tool vs. Single Tool

The primary difference between the P340 and P343 is the fact that the former is a multi-tool and the latter is a one-piece tool only. 

Now let me make it more clear for you. The P340 is compatible with multiple head attachments which makes it quite impressive in terms of versatility. It is basically a cordless oscillating saw which supports a variety of head attachments like a sanding pad, Allen wrench, etc. 

This of course gives you the freedom to execute multifarious functions using a single device only which by the way, also makes it a good choice to carry around at different work sites. 

The P343, on the other hand, is a one-piece oscillating saw which can also prove to be a great choice provided you’re looking for an oscillating tool only. 

Additionally, the P340 comes with a universal adapter which seems to be missing in the latest P343.

Anyway, if you’re looking for greater flexibility and adaptability then, the P340 should be your choice, without question. However, the P343 isn’t any less either as long your requirements are being fulfilled. 

Speed Trigger

The P340 features a pressure-activated trigger only whereas, the P343 is equipped with a variable speed dial as well as a trigger.

We’re not quite a fan of the pressure-activated trigger in the P340 because it can be hard to operate when working for a longer period of time. You have to continuously press the trigger to keep the tool functioning which is definitely a nuisance when working on demanding projects. 

Also, the trigger is located way back on the machine which further adds to the inconvenience, especially when handling precision tasks. An on/off switch or at least a trigger lock would have made the tool better. 

The P343, on the contrary, features a variable speed dial through which you can adjust the speed at different levels; 1, 2, 3, etc. There’s no need to constantly hold any trigger to keep the P343 running. Just adjust the dial at your desired speed and keep going with your task.

So the P343 definitely gets plus points for its ergonomic construction and convenient speed dial.


The P340 weighs around 2.15 pounds without battery while the P343 is slightly lighter in weight at 2.01 pounds. 

Since both of these oscillating tools by Ryobi are close to equal in terms of their weight, they’re equally easy to hold for longer work sessions. Both tools are lightweight with a balanced construction which makes them an excellent choice for work. 

Final Verdict 

The Ryobi P340, as well as the P343, are exceptional at their function and performance. These tools feature an ergonomic construction and deliver an outstanding performance right out of the box. However, we’re slightly more drawn to the P340 because of its flexible functionality. But the final choice always depends on each individual’s requirements!
